This work is based on a tomb model from the Eastern Han Dynasty, China (206 BC - 220 AD). It is a model of a central watchtower constructed of glazed earthenware clay. It has two chambers, the lidded box forming the bottom floors and a lidded box that lifts out from the top.The surface is embellished with a complex variety of handbuilt and carved decorative elements indicating architectural features. A vast assortment of architectural models were placed in Han tombs for use in the afterlife. A work this elaborate would have symbolized the high status of the person buried in the tomb.
